IRceL™ Miniature Infrared Gas Sensor
Designed in the popular “4-Series” size (16.6mm high by 20.4mm diameter) IRceL™ are available as either IRceL™ CO2 for detecting carbon dioxide (0-5% vol) or IRceL™ HC for hydrocarbons (0-100% LEL pentane). Both versions of the sensor are certified to flameproof and intrinsically safe standards. The IRceL™ has been designed to deliver the best possible performance and uses high quality optics comprising a long-life tungsten filament bulb as the IR source and a dual channel pyroelectric detector (reference and detector). Incorporating a novel design and light distribution system in the optical cavity the IRceL&a#153; offers significant improvements in performance over other optical designs so enabling reliable and reproducibly operation across a wide temperature range (-20oC to 50oC). Each sensor has an embedded EEPROM that as well as containing the sensor serial number, contains device-specific calibration factors for signal linearisation and temperature compensation. Temperature data is provided from a thermistor within the sensor. The information in the EEPROM is easily read by the instrument so allowing fast and reliable signal compensation to be performed using a standard algorithm in the instrument. IRceL™ can operate with a supply voltage between 3 and 5 V dc and typically only requires 160mW power to operate (at 5V, 2Hz, 50% duty cycle). This move follows the success of City’s MICROpeL, the world’s smallest sensor yet for combustible gases, launched at Sensor 2003 in May.
The very small size of the MICROceL CF, HS and OX has been achieved by using an innovative “single-skin” sensor design combined with City’s radical patented IMES* (Injection Moulded Electrolyte Seal) sealing system. This has enabled the footprint of all three sensors to be limited to just 17mm2 and 4mm depth, the smallest the world has yet seen. Integration is easier than ever before with the sensors new ‘slot in’ connectivity, replacing conventional pins and sockets. The colour-coded connectors are also suitable for surface mount directly onto an instrument pcb and are compatible with reflow soldering. Brian Roake is City Technology’s Sales & Marketing Director: “City’s been leading the world with innovative gas sensing solutions for over 26 years and the MICROceL range is the result of this experience coupled with over 3 years’ dedicated R&D. Our MICROceL range is set to change the whole approach to gas detection instrument design. We’re now supplying a number of instrument makers who are already developing the next generation of smaller, lighter instruments destined for those working in the most risky and dangerous industrial environments. It’s great to know that City is helping to make the world a safer place to live and work. “The adage ‘Size matters’ is certainly true in gas
detection but it’s smaller that’s better in this sector. And
although our new MICROceL products weigh in at as little as 1.2g,
they still manage to pack a big punch on performance. Genuine technological
advance is rare but at City we can definitely say that the MICROceL
has affected a step change that heralds a whole new era in industrial
safety solutions.” For further media information please contact: Nicola Nye at nicola.nye@citytech.co.uk Or + 44 (0)23 9228 8146 *IMES is patented technology manufactured by City Technology under license from Anglo-European Design Engineers Ltd.
