City Technology launches new shock resistant CiTipeL® - the P50

City Technology announces the launch of a new shock resistant pellistor for the detection of combustible gases. Now, portable safety instruments used in mines and other confined high risk environments can incorporate robust two-can style pellistors. This development allows older instruments to reap the benefits later designs have enjoyed by using miniature detector head pellistors.

Shock resistance combined with orientation insensitivity

The P50 offers OEMs the dual advantages of shock resistance and orientation insensitivity. To date, these benefits have only been available for new designs of instruments, utilizing the miniature detector head format pioneered by City in the 4P range. Now, the many thousands of instruments already out in the field can readily accommodate the P50 which has been developed as a drop-in replacement for the 50N CiTipeL® and other traditional two-can style pellistors, for instrument manufacturers requiring superior robustness and orientation insensitivity.

David Baines, Sales & Marketing Director said: "This is the first of a number of developments to the CiTipeL® range that we have in the pipeline this year. City's existing pellistor range for portable instruments is underpinned by our experience of catalytic bead design and pioneering planar technology. The new P50 CiTipeL has been born from this. Our development scientists are constantly challenged by the increasingly diverse applications and, in turn, customer requirements. The P50 is just another example of providing what the market wants. It's good that we have so much experience to draw on."

Performance characteristics

The P50, like all pellistors, employs catalytic combustion to measure combustible gases or vapours in air up to their Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). The P50 functions over a range of 0-100% LEL and requires an operating voltage of 4.25±0.1V. It uses a detector operating current of <60mA while its Output Sensitivity is 36-56 mV/%methane. The detector's T90 Response Time is <15 seconds and it is linear to 0-3% methane. Long-term Sensitivity Drift is low at <5% signal/month while the Long-Term Zero Drift is <5% LELmethane/month.

The P50 CiTipeL® enjoys a warranty of 12 months from the date of dispatch.

Watch this space for news of the forthcoming P90 CiTipeL®: with a power requirement of 3.5V, 75mA, the P90 will be suitable for instruments at present incorporating City's 90N sensor.
