History

City Technology was founded in 1977 by four scientists working at London's City University to exploit novel oxygen sensing technology that had been developed by the University's Wolfson Institute for Electrochemical Technology.

The company's technical achievements in the development of these metal can oxygen sensors were recognised in 1982 by the award of the Queen's Award for Technological Achievement. Over the next 10 years City Technology added electrochemical toxic gas sensor and pellistors for combustible gas detection to the product range. City's toxic sensor range also won a Queen's Award for Technology in 1985.

With growing sales success City Technology won two further Queen's Awards for Export Achievement in 1988 and 1992.

By 1990 City Technology had outgrown its original premises in central London and relocated to a purpose built facility in Portsmouth on the south coast of England.

During 1993 the Directors of City Technology staged a management buyout of the company and then went on to float on the London Stock Exchange in June 1996. In April 2000 City Technology was purchased by First Technology plc, a UK based international group manufacturing products that play important roles in improving safety and protection of people and their environment.

In March 2006 First Technology plc was acquired by Honeywell– a $26 billion diversified technology company employing 120,000 in 95 countries around the world. City Technology has become Honeywell’s leading brand for gas sensors and supplies a wide range of gas sensors including the Sensoric and Sixth Sense product ranges.

City Technology annually supplies 3 million sensors (across all product ranges) and has a range of over 300 different sensors detecting 28 gases. Our sensors are sold to customers in 48 countries around the world and 80% of our annual production is exported.
